126 people were killed today, 20th March when four suicide bombers targeted two mosques used by supporters of Shi'ite Houthi fighters who currently control the capital.
Islamic State has taken reponsibility for the attacks.
Four bombers wearing explosive belts targeted worshippers. While one suicide bomber targeted those inside the mosque, another targeted those running out of the mosque. This was the scenario in the Badr mosque and the second mosque. Another bomber also tried to target a mosque in Sadaa province but the bomb he was carrying detonated prematuredly killing only the bomber.
It is estimated that over 250 people were wounded and taken to hospitals. The hospitals are overwhelmed and are asking for donation of blood to help treat the large number of casualties.
A statement posted by supporters of Islamic State on twitter claiming responsibility for the attacks said, "Let the polytheist Houthis know that the soldiers of the Islamic State will not rest and will not stay still until they extirpate them.
The President of Yemen, Abdo Rabbu Mansour Hadi fled the capital in February after he was put under house arrest by the Houthis for over one month and set his power base in Southern city of Aden, however for the past two days warplanes have dropped bombs in Alden Palace including the President's residence but reports say he was unarmed.
