NIGERIAN GOVERNMENT MAKES APPEAL ON BEHALF OF NIGERIAN DRUG SMUGGLERS AWAITING EXECUTION IN INDONESIA

Three Nigerians are among a group of foreigners to face execution after being convicted of drug smuggling in Indonesia. The Nigerians are among other foreigners from Australia, Ghana, France and Brazil awaiting execution by firing squad.
Their last appeal for clemency was rejected by the President of Indonesia, Joko Widodo.
Nigerian government  has pleaded for clemency through the Indonesian Ambassador to Nigeria.
The Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Danjuma Sheni while meeting  with the Indonesian Ambassador in Abuja on Monday appealed for conversion of the sentences to life imprisonment and that the appeal should be granted in order not to jeopardise the existing robust and excellent relationship between Nigeria and Indonesia.
Replying, the Indonesian Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr. Harry  Purwato explained that the situation had reached a point of no return and that foreigners travelling to Indonesia know that their lives are at stake if they smuggle drugs. Mr. Purwato said the convicted Nigerian smugglers have exhausted all the legal processes available to them.
One of the convicts, Mr. Raheem Agbaje- Salami has been moved to the death island, Nusakambangan Island where he will be executed.
