POLLING STATIONS IN NIGERIA RE-OPEN ON SUNDAY AFTER EXTENSION

Polling stations in problem areas were reopened in Nigeria for voting in the Presidential and National Assembly elections on Sunday following the extension by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

According to INEC about 300 polling stations out of 150,000 polling stations were reopened on Sunday following the failure of the new technology employed for accreditation of voters.

In these problem areas,  many voters were not accredited by the card reader, a situation which brought embarrassment to the country when the President of Nigeria, Goodluck Jonathan and the First Lady, Patience Jonathan could not be accredited by the card reader and had to fill the 'incident forms' in their hometown of Otuoke before they could vote.

INEC has however directed the Resident electoral commissioners in these problem areas to use manual accreditation where the card readers fail.

The polling stations were opened by 7.00am local time.
