PRESIDENT GOODLUCK JONATHAN REITERATES THE NEED FOR PEACEFUL ELECTIONS



President Goodluck Jonathan on Wednesday met with a delegation of the National Committee on Peaceful Elections led by the former Head of State, General Abdulsalam Abubakar where he reiterated and committed to a peaceful, free, fair and credible election on 28th March and 11th April 2015 during the Presidential and Legislative elections.
President Jonathan said all parties should urge their supporters to eschew violence and approach the elections with patriotism as well as putting the interest of the country above any personal ambitions.
The President warned that the government  will not tolerate any form of violence during the polls which would reverse the gains of the present democratic dispensation in the country.
President Jonathan said he was willing to sign another peace accord with the Presidential Candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and called on religious, traditional and political leaders to be vociferous in condemning incidences of electoral violence in the country.
The Chairman of the National Committee on Peaceful Elections, General Abubakar commended the President for his consistency in insisting on peaceful, fair and free elections.
Other members of the National Committee on Peaceful Elections who attended the meeting included, Commodore Ebitu Ukiwe(rtd),  Cardinal John Onaiyekan, the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa'ad Abubakar, Bishop Matthew Hassan Kukah, Prof. Zainab Alkali, Sam Amuka- Pemu, Mrs. Priscilla Kuye and Justice Rose Ukeje.
