The recipient is 21 year old man who has not been publicly identified.
The 21 year old man according to BBC lost his penis during a circumcision that went awry, a transition from boyhood to manhood, a practice in some parts of South Africa.
By the time the boy was 18 years old he was already sexually active but left with only 1cm of his original penis.
He received his penis from a deceased donor.
The operation which lasted nine hours took place on 11th December 2014 at Stellenbosch University and Tygerberg hospital.
Three months after the operation, the doctors said recovery has been fast but full sensation has not returned and could probably take 2 years.
The recipient is happy with the result, he can pass urine, have an erection, orgasm and ejaculate.
The South African doctors who carried out the non-life threatening operation said they had an extensive discussion on how ethical the operation was but got the ethical approval after a "a hell of a lot of time'.
