BALTIMORE: VIOLENCE ERUPTS FOLLOWING BURIAL OF A BLACK MAN WHO DIED IN POLICE CUSTODY


A state of emergency has been declared in Baltimore as the city was engulfed in violence following the funeral of Freddie Gray,25, who died in police custody after a severed spine. He died on April 19th.
Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake has issued a 10pm-5am curfew starting Tuesday.
Over 1000 Maryland police officers, the Maryland National guard and 5000 officers from neighbouring states are on standby in the city.
15 police officers have been injured, many with broken bones, 2 out of the 15 are in hospital and in serious condition.
A $16 million nursing home built by Baptist church which took 8 years to build and was due to open in December has been burnt down. Also close to it a house development has been set ablaze.
A CVS pharmacy was not left out as it was also set ablaze by the rioters who tried to slash fire fighters' hoses as they tried to put out the flames.
27 people have so far been arrested. Freddie Gray's family has denounced the riots.
