British colonialist Cecil Rhodes Statue was removed amidst cheers from protesters at University of Cape Town (UCT).
University of Cape Town's council say it will be kept in a safe place.
Students have been clamouring for its removal.
The 19th century statue was unveiled in 1934.
Various people , members of political parties, Cape Town residents, students, academics all came to witness the historic event.
Once it was removed, some students started hitting it with sticks and covering its face with plastic.
Other colonial era leaders' monuments have been the target of protest in South Africa
