EBOLA: NEW SPECIAL ENVOY ON EBOLA VISITS SIERRA LEONE AS NEW CASES EMERGE

New Special Envoy, Mr. Graff joined outgoing Special Representative, Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed and Secretary General Envoy on Ebola, David Nabarro on a visit to Sierra Leone. They were briefed by National Ebola Response Centre (NERC) on efforts to achieve zero transmission. They were informed that Kambia District of Sierra Leone is still a transmission epicentre as a result of its neighbouring district of Forecariah in Guinea which continues to record high numbers of Ebola cases.
World Health Organisation (WHO) has issued its weekly update for the week ended 26th April and it stated that 33 confirmed cases of ebola virus disease were reported in West Africa.
Forecariah in Guinea and Kambia in Sierra Leone account for 25 or 76% of all confirmed cases reported.
WHO states that 'in both Guinea and Sierra Leone, the fact that cases continue to be identified after post mortem testing together with the fact that around half of all cases arise in people not identified as contacts of previous cases suggest that surveillance and community engagement still require improvement in some areas.
Liberia has no confirmed cases of Ebola for the 5th consecutive week.
