HIV: 130 PEOPLE NOW INFECTED IN RURAL INDIANA HIV OUTBREAK

State health officials on Friday said  that the HIV outbreak in South Eastern Indiana in rural Scott county which resulted because of abuse of intravenous prescription drugs has increased by 24 cases during the past week making it a total of 130 cases.
A needle exchange program started on April 4th for Scott county residents and so far 5322 clean syringes have been distributed to 86 people and 1400 used syringes collected.
This expires April 25 but could be extended.
Indiana bans needle exchanges but Governor Mike Pence had to authorise a short term program to address the outbreak with the provision of sterile needles for drug users.
