HIV: NEEDLE EXCHANGE BEGINS IN SCOTT COUNTY, INDIANA TO CURB HIV OUTBREAK


A needle exchange program by health officials began on Saturday in Scott County in Austin City, Indiana, United States of America where there is an HIV outbreak among intravenous drug users.

There are nearly 90 cases of HIV in the county.

A needle exchange program was signed by Governor Mike Pence as an emergency attempt to curb the states largest ever HIV outbreak.
The program is open to Scott residents through community outreach centre in the city of Austin.
Each participant receives enough needles for one  week as a way to stop needle sharing which caused the epidemic.

Free HIV screening, drug treatment referrals, Hepatitis A and B vaccinations are also available.

The Governor, Mike Pence 30 day order temporarily suspended Indiana's ban on such programs.
