United States President, Mr. Barrack Obama on Wednesday commended President Goodluck Jonathan and President elect for their commitment to non-violence during the elections and implored on them to ensure peaceful elections during the Gubernatorial and House of Assembly elections coming up on the 11th of April,2015 even in the most hotly contested races.
President Obama maintained that isolated logistical challenges be overcome and peace protected.
Obama's statement was made known in a press statement made available by the Office of the Spokesperson of the Department of State in Washington.
President Obama praised President Goodluck Jonathan for conceding defeat in the presidential elections and having the interest of Nigeria at heart by doing so and looked forward to working with him till the remainder of his tenure which ends on May 29th, 2015.
"I thank him for his many years of service and his statesmanlike conduct at this critical juncture" Obama's statement read.
He urged President Jonathan and President elect, Buhari to implore their party supporters to accept the election results as well as intensify efforts in unifying the country.
Prresident Obama commended Nigerians for turning out in large numbers to vote for candidates of their choice thereby showing commitment to democratic principles.
On the Chairman of the Independent Electoral Commission, (INEC), Obama said,
"The electoral body and Jega deserve special recognition for the largely peaceful and orderly election, I commend INEC for its extensive efforts to increase the credibility and transparency of the electoral process"
