SOUTH CAROLINA POLICE OFFICER CHARGED WITH MURDER OF A BLACK MAN


A white police officer in North Charleston, South Carolina, Michael Slager,33 was on Tuesday charged with the murder of an unarmed black father of four, Walter Scott .

A video from a cellphone showed  the policeman shooting the black man as he ran away.

The incident occured around 9.30am on Saturday after Slager (the police officer) pulled over Scott's car because of a broken tail light.

The video showed Slater shooting Scott eight times as he ran away in a vacant lot. Other police officers tried to give Scott CPR but he died at the scene of the incident.

The family of Walter Scott has hailed the emergence of the video saying, "All we wanted was the truth".

Authorities on Tuesday said the video was a turning point in the case and apologised to the family.

North Charleston Mayor , R.Keith Summey said, "When you're wrong , you're wrong" "If you make a bad decision, don't care if you're behind the shield...you have to live with that decision"

Eddie Driggers, the Police Chief said at a conference, "its been a tragic day for many".

Officer Michael Slager,33, has been arrested by the South Carolina Law enforcement Division and faces 30 years to life in prison or the death penalty.
