
Chuka Umunna, 37, nicknamed 'British Obama' on Tuesday said he will run for the leadership of the Britain's opposition Labour Party after the parties woeful outing at the just concluded national elections held last week.
Chuka a centre- left politician who specialises in business policy is the son of a Nigerian immigrant and has been the business spokesperson of Labour party since 2011.
A former lawyer, Chuka was first elected as a Member of Parliament in 2010. He got re-elected to represent Streatham district in London last week.
He is the favourite of book makers to win the job of Labour Party leader.
In declaring his quest to run for the leadership position, Chuka said,
"Iam pleased today to be announcing that I will be standing for the leadership of the party" in a video posted on Facebook.
"Some have actually suggested over the last few days that somehow this is now a 10 year project to get the Labour Party back into office.... I think the Labour Party can do it in five years. I want to lead that effort".
On Sunday, Umunna said the Labour Party during the election campaign concentrated its policies on the poorest and the richest ignoring majority of the people in-between.
