BURUNDI: PRIVATE RADIO, TV STATIONS ATTACKED FOLLOWING COUP ATTEMPT


Attacks have been carried out on Independent Media broadcasters in the capital of Burundi following the coup attempt on Wednesday in which a private radio station was used to launch the coup.
The influential Africa Public Radio (RPA) station  which was shut down during weeks of protests against the president and reopened after the coup attempt was hit by a rocket which set it ablaze, witnesses said.
Media boss and rights activist, Innocent Muhozi's independent television station was also attacked.
"During the night a truck full of police attacked RPA" Muhozi said adding that after fighting the pro-coup troops guarding the place, they fired a rocket at the building.
Attacks on Independent media came as pro-coup troops engaged in heavy battle with the troops loyal to President Nkurunziza who are guarding the state television and radio complex.
Godefroid Niyombare, a former Ambassador to Kenya and intelligence chief launched a coup on Wednesday following series of protests against the President's third term bid.
