HIV: A NEW DEVICE, A MATCHSTICK SIZE IMPLANT COULD REVOLUTIONIZE HIV TREATMENT

Scientists at Oak Crest Institute of Science in California have made a new invention which they believe offers a more effective means of treating patients. The device, a matchstick size implant designed to sit under the skin delivers controlled amount of anti retroviral drugs over a sustained period of time.
Experts hope it can sit under the skin for 12 months.
The treatment is also expected to prevent the spread of HIV and those successful on the plan are unlikely to pass the virus to a sexual partner, similarly mothers are less likely to pass to unborn children.
Early tests on animals for a 40 day period showed no side effects and study author and founder of Oak Crest, Dr Marc Baum has said to their knowledge this is the first implant to be used for this purpose.
Everybody acknowledges that the drawback with current treatment is the problem of patients keeping up with taking their drugs.
This is a welcome development.
