Ivory Coast has banned skin whitening creams as a result of health concerns, the health ministry says.
Cosmetic lightening and hygiene creams that de-pigment the skin are now forbidden so says the health ministry.
Whitening creams are popular in Africa as most people believe the lighter you are the more beautiful you are but medical experts say these unregulated creams can cause cancer, diabetes and severe skin cobnditions and other diseases.
Christian Doudouko, a member of Ivory Coast's Pharmaceutical Ministry was quoted as saying, "the number of people with side effects caused by these medicines is really high"
