EBOLA: WHO UPDATE FOR THE WEEK ENDED JUNE 21

According to World Health Organisation (WHO) there are 20 confirmed cases of Ebola virus disease reported for the week ended June 21 against 24 cases of the previous week.

Weekly case incidence has stalled at between 20-27 cases since end of May while cases continue to rise from unknown sources of infection and to be detected only after post-morterm testing of community deaths.
For Guinea, WHO notes that although cases have been reported for same 4 prefectures in Guinea, in the past three weeks, the area of active transmission within those prefectures has changed and on several instances has expanded.
WHO further said that in the northern prefecture of Boke, the main focus of transmission has switched from the coastal sub-prefecture of Kamsar to the more urbanised Boke centre and of particular concern two of the cases reported from Boke in the week ended June 21 were health workers.
For Sierra Leone, transmission has been more confined geographically over the past three weeks.
However in a government report released on Wednesday June 24th, Ebola disease has returned to the capital of Sierra Leone, Freetown after being absent for 18 consecutive days.
This came about when a sick boy with the disease escaped quarantine from another county and came to Freetown. 4 new cases have now been confirmed in Freetown.
Meanwhile the Head of the United Nations Mission for Ebola Emergency Response (UNMEER), Peter Graff has arrived Guinea to take stock of preventions and preparedness efforts in Guinea Bissau as the country remains at high risk  given proximity to Guinea where new cases of the virus were reported in an urban area bordering the two countries.
