The council which comprises the 36 state governors and the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria as members have the responsibility to advise the President on economic affairs of the country.
Buhari while inaugurating the council reiterated his administrations commitment to tackling corruption, insecurity as well as other social vices and tasked the members of the council to come up with ways of paying outstanding salaries and wages accross the country.
