WIKE FORCEFULLY RETRIEVES OFFICIAL CAR OF FORMER RIVERS STATE COMMISSIONER FOR INFORMATION

Security operatives on Thursday carried out an operation at Mrs Ibim Semenitari's home located at Ernest Ikoli Street old GRA Port Harcourt and recovered her official Lexus car. Mrs Ibim Semenitari was the Commissioner for Information in Rivers State in the past administration for eight years.

A statement by Simeon Nwakudu on the incident, said that the previous administration of Rotimi Amaechi carted away several government properties and vehicles prior to May 29 handover date and that the new River State Governor, Nyemsom Ezenwo Wike has assured River State people that all government property illegally carted away before his inauguration will be recovered and those involved in the illegal act will be brought to justice.
However, Mrs Ibim Semenitari has said that over 10 policemen without any search warrant, previous notification, forced their way into her premise and attempted to take a Range Rover belonging to her husband who is the Managing Director of Unity Bank and in the process damaged the front door of the vehicle.
She also asserts that the Lexus jeep which the operatives took was officially allocated to her as a commissioner and the monetization policy of government allows public officers to leave government with their official vehicles as this is in lieu of vehicle, transport and other allowances which they cannot draw because of the monetisation policy of 2002.
Our opinion on this as former bank managers who were also allocated official cars.
When an officer is allocated official car in their capacity as a high ranking officer and they want to leave the organisation, what happens is if the vehicle is not fully depreciated the officer will be asked to pay the amount outstanding on it.
It is for the officer to decide whether to pay or not and if he/she doesn't pay will have to return the car at the time of leaving but if the car is fully depreciated it becomes the officer's own.
In this scenario, the new government of Rivers State went for overkill. Strictly our opinion.
