The new Multinational Task Force has a boosted force of 8,700 troops from Cameroon, Chad, Niger and Nigeria and is expected to be fully operational in August.
Major General Iliya Abbah is not new to this type of work as he previously led operations against militants in the oil-rich Niger Delta.
The new force chief has promised to crush the Islamist group, Boko Haram very soon.
Iliya Abbah said at a ceremony in Abuja where he was formally appointed Chief of the Multinational Task Force,
"I assure (you), by the will of God, that I will live (up) to expectations and we will see the end of this menace very soon"
