NIGERIA: SENATE ORDERS MINISTER IN CHARGE OF POWER, FASHOLA TO REVERSE NEW ELECTRICITY TARIFF
The Nigerian Senate has ordered the Federal Ministry of Power, Works and Housing and the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, NERC to immediately reverse the hike in electricity tariff that took effect from the 1st of February.
The order was given after the upper chamber adopted a motion moved by Senator Suleiman Nazif, a member of the ruling party, APC representing Bauchi North.
Senator Ike Ekweremadu, the Deputy Senate President while contributing to the motion said allowing the increase will only worsen the plight of Nigerians who have already suffered enough.
The Senate while giving the directive for reversal to status quo on electricity tariff asked its committee on Labour to carefully review the law establishing NERC with a view to making it stronger so that both the investor and consumer will be treated fairly and equitably.
The Senate also mandated its committee on Employment, Labour and Productivity to organise public hearing of stakeholders, which includes, the Ministry of Power, the Distribution companies, DISCOS, the Generating Companies, GENCOS and NERC so that acceptable way of resolving all issues relating to the sector are effectively taken care of.
