Sports giants, Nike have terminated ace boxer Manny Pacquiao's contract with them following Pacquiao's homophobic comments.
Pacquiao, 37, had caused a stir and suffered huge public backlash when he made a comment during a television interview in Phillipines where he is running for a senate seat in the May elections.that homosexuals were 'worse than animals'. He has however apologised for his comments.
Nike released a statement this Wednesday evening stating that they have terminated any form of relationship with Pacquiao.
The statement reads,
''We find Manny Pacquiao's comments abhorrent.
''Nike strongly opposes discrimination of any kinds and has a long history of supporting and standing up for the rights of the LGBT community".
''We no longer have a relationship with Manny Pacquiao".
During an interview in Phillipines, Pacquiao had said about homosexuals,
'It's common sense. Do you see animals mating with the same sex?"
"Animals are better because they can distinguish male from female. If men mate with men and women mate with women they are worse than animals".
Though Pacquiao has apologised over his controversial statement, Nike went ahead to terminate any relationship with him. With slide in sales, guess Nike didnot want to be burdened with such controversy that can further ruin their brand.
