INCREASING TREND OF ADULTERY AMONGST MARRIED NIGERIAN WOMEN

While this piece is not to call out a particular group of women from a particular country, but one can only write what she knows and sees.
Nigeria is the biggest African country with a population of over 200 million people.

In Africa, with particular reference to Nigeria, marriage is regarded as a sacred institution, however the culture allows men to marry more than one wife but with the advent of christianity, men now settle with one wife except for their muslim counterparts whose religion permit more than one wife.

Previously what was the norm were tales of men cheating on their wives but in recent times in Nigeria, married women are giving men a run for their money in adultery.

Some would say if the men can do it why cannot the women.
But in Africa it is a really big deal and a taboo for a woman to go outside her marriage to catch fun.

The Nigerian woman once she reaches the age of 30 is expected to have already gotten married and started her home.

When this is not the case, family, friends and the public will shame and torment the lady for still being single.

People will start counting her age for the period she remains single.

What has happened is a scenario where many women enter into marriage just to get the title of being married due to the pressure.

In most instances, the women are not in love with their spouses.

If they are lucky, they marry rich and well to do men but in most cases they settle for any man just to be called a married woman.

What has become the norm in Nigeria is married women shameless and openly engage in extra marital affairs and introduce their fellow married friends to the lifestyle, a situation that has resulted in increase in domestic violence.

The Nigerian man cannot fathom how he could marry an adulterous woman and some of them in order to show they are still in charge resort to violence against their wives instead of divorcing them.

There are two broad categories of married Nigerian women who cheat.

There are the ones whose husbands have respectable income but do not give their wives enough money to splurge on clothes, cars, shoes etc in this social media age.

The second category are the breadwinners of their homes. The married woman earns more than her husband and as such erroneously believes she can cheat in the marriage. Here you have some who are bankers, actresses, executive officers etc.

In order to belong to a certain social status, these married Nigerian women many who are extremely beautiful engage in illicit affairs with money bags which include politicians, oil magnates, bank executives who fund the lifestyle which their husbands cannot afford.

The adulterous rich Nigerian women who work often engage in affairs with their colleagues who they spend a majority of the time with often pretending they are working late hours when in actual fact they are just having fun in the office or in some hotel and often take several trips abroad which they call official trips when in actual fact it is a scheme to continue their illicit trysts from prying eyes.

Having watched a colleague date another colleague for three years while still married to another man is just beyond me.

Her husband has become the laughing stock everywhere. He is ignorant of his wife's behaviour.

The question is what will happen when he finally finds out what his wife has been up to all these years.

Africa prides itself with cultures based on morality.

Our ancestors will be turning in their graves with the turn of events.
