He was arrested after a member of the public recognised him and called 911.
Dylan on Wednesday around 9pm opened fire at the historic Emmanuel Ame Church in Charleston, South Carolina killing 3 men and 6 women aged between 26 and 78 in a hate crime.
Roof who had been given a gun as a birthday present by his dad entered the church, joined the bible study group and barely an hour later, suddenly opened fire.
Among those he killed is 41 year old Reverend Clementa Pinckney, Pastor of the church and a South Carolina State Senator who had a wife and two young daughters.
Roof is said to have let a woman escape so she can tell the world what happened.
President Obama has described the killings as senseless and said it highlighted the need for gun control.
Dylann has confessed to the crimes and said he wanted to start a race war. He also said he nearly didnot commit the crime as the members of Emanuel Ame Church who he met were very nice to him.
